YANKTON MODEL PROGRAM
SANFORD SCHOOL OF MEDICINE OF THE
UNIVERSITY OF SOUTH DAKOTA
SCHOOL OF MEDICINE
An interdisciplinary 12-month continuity experience of ambulatory-based medical education. A unique, innovative program in medical education - a response to recommendations for change in medical student education to better match the needs of today's society, to produce primary care physicians oriented to serve their community. Third year medical students from Sanford School of Medicine of the University of South Dakota spend their entire third year centered at the Yankton Medical Clinic. Fourth year medical students also have elective rotations at Yankton Medical Clinic.
Medical students are introduced to patients and continue to follow those patients throughout the year, thus providing a continuity experience.
Awareness of community responsibility is introduced to each student through a proposal and implementation of their own community project. This project in turn introduces the community to the Yankton Model Program and Sanford School of Medicine of the University of South Dakota.
Educators from Yankton, as well as other campuses of USD School of Medicine, (Vermillion, Sioux Falls, and Rapid City) lend strength to the students' education by facilitating small group sessions, teaching hands-on clinical skills, and speaking at student-requested clinical symposiums.
