Dr. April Willman being presented an award by the University of South Dakota Sanford School of Medicine.

Dr. April Willman has been selected as the 2019 Anton Hyden Memorial Award recipient by the University of South Dakota Sanford School of Medicine.

Willman, a pediatrician, has practiced at Yankton Medical Clinic, P.C. since 2015 and serves as a clinical associate professor at USD SSOM.  The Hyden award is given in memory of Dr. Anton Hyden to preserve the memory and high regard in which Hyden was held in his field of urology, as a physician, surgeon, teacher and a person.

Upon learning she was chosen for the award Willman expressed “I was surprised, taken aback, and extremely honored to be chosen by the Classes of 2019 and 2020 for this award.” Willman continued “I do genuinely enjoy teaching.  I love helping students learn, and especially teaching and mentoring those in medical training, as I have a part in educating the caregivers of the future.  I try to demonstrate and validate lifelong learning as well as compassion.  To know that these medical students appreciated that and found it inspiring is extremely rewarding.”

The Hyden award is presented to a USD SSOM professor selected by students of the junior and senior classes. It recognizes a professor who has inspired and helped those students the most during their final two years in medical school.

Willman attended the award ceremony May 4 during the medical school’s graduation convocation to accept the award.
